Damage reports from the U.S.-Mexico border region are growing after a magnitude-7.2 earthquake in Baja California that was felt from Tijuana and Los Angeles to Las Vegas and Phoenix.
The quake struck south of Mexicali, Mexico, at 3:40 p.m. Sunday, but damage also was being reported north of the border.
Calexico Fire Chief Peter Mercado tells KABC-TV in Los Angeles that there is substantial damage in the older section of the southeastern California city. Mercado says there is structural damage and broken windows, leaking gas lines and damage to the water system. But he says no injuries have been reported.

What is it with Sean Penn? When he’s not busy wishing rectal cancer on his critics (and looking constipated while doing it), he’s slamming Americans who dare to say mean and nasty things about his pal Hugo Chavez. I kid you not!
In a recent appearance on Bill Maher’s HBO show, Penn showered praise on Venezuela for assisting him in assisting the quake victims in Haiti. He also claimed to have a little sympathy for those who hold America-as-an-evil-empire-looking-to-conquer-the-world views. Then he turns around and says journalists here who call Chavez a dictator (shudder) should do a stint in the hoosegow:

A Haitian judge has decided to release 10 U.S. missionaries accused of kidnapping 33 children and trying to spirit them out of the earthquake- stricken country, a judicial source said on Wednesday.
The source said the missionaries, who have been in jail since they were stopped at Haiti’s border with the Dominican Republic on January 29, could be released as early as Thursday.

Scantily clad dancers were the draw at a downtown men’s entertainment club over the weekend for an event that raised nearly $1,000 for victims of the earthquake in Haiti.
Marilyn’s on Monroe, 715 Monroe St., billed Saturday’s affair as “Lap dances for Haiti.”
Although the billing may be misleading – lap dancing is illegal in Ohio – the intention isn’t.

Parents in this struggling village above Haiti’s capital said Wednesday they willingly handed their children to American missionaries who showed up in a bus promising to give them a better life—contradicting claims by the Baptist group’s leader that the children came from orphanages and distant relatives.
The 10 Baptists, most from Idaho, were arrested last week trying to take 33 Haitian children across the border into the Dominican Republic without the required documents, according to outraged Haitian officials, who have called them child traffickers.

Actor Danny Glover believes that the Haitian earthquake was caused by climate change and global warming:
Says Glover: “When we see what we did at the climate summit in Copenhagen, this is the response, this is what happens, you know what I’m sayin’?

The pictures and stories from the Haiti earthquake are the stuff of nightmares: orphaned children are sleeping amongst corpses, voices crying from deep beneath dust and cinderblock gradually grow silent, blood runs in gutters, the dead are stacked like cordwood, the injured are broken and gashed on cracked sidewalks waiting for help, aid agencies can barely fly, drive or walk through the broken infrastructures to help.
Nothing can be done soon enough.
